Stephanie Holmes-Winton on CacheFlo Planning

No we did not misspell Cash Flow. CacheFlo is the name of Stephanie Holmes-Winton’s business. They build software to help people understand their own finances. Stephanie specializes in, and has pioneered much of the field of behavioural cash flow planning. This is the idea that no matter who you are, and where you are in the wealth spectrum, your behaviour governs how you spend, when you spend, and why you spend. This is a fundamentally different way of looking at things than the approach taken by the typical financial advisor. In this episode of the Go Full Crypto podcast, we interview Stephanie to gain a deeper understanding into her definitions of financial literacy.

Stephanie the Author of $pent

One of the tools that Stephanie uses to guide her business, is Money Mindsets. This is Stephanie’s very own way of conceptualizing how different people think about, and act upon the money they have. This is a super useful way of conceptualizing your own money mindset. There are 7 in total, and you may resonate with one or more of them. Stephanie covers them with us in the podcast, so you will have to either buy the book or listen to the podcast to find out which money mindset belong to you.

CacheFlo is FinTech

Stephanie actually gave me (Keegan) my first job as a software engineer. This was essentially my introduction into Financial Technology, as well as financial literacy in general. It didn’t take much to get me absolutely hooked on the world of possibilities with respect to improving the state of our finances. Financial Technology is super exciting, because the paradigm we’re coming from is so easy to improve upon. The legacy financial system is rife with friction, and inefficiencies. Financial Technology stands to bring simplified financial tools and literacy to the masses. This is what got me excited about building FinTech, and ultimately led me to conclude that cryptocurrency is most certainly a form of FinTech.

Stephanie is a Change-Maker

Go Full Crypto and CacheFlo are from the same corner of the world. Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is a small city of about 500 thousand people. We’re on the east most point of the mainland of Canada. Historically, this is a place that is slow to change, and slow to follower those who are making changes. At the end of the episode, Mrugakshee asks Stephanie, “What is one radical idea that you have, that you’d like to see come true”. Stephanie simply answered,

Much of what we’ve done in hindsight would be considered pretty radical

I loved this answer, because it is true, to most what Stephanie has built would seem very radical. Yet, CacheFlo is a beacon of inspiration for young entrepreneurs who are told their ideas wont work. Stephanie has inspired both Mrugakshee and I to think differently when running our business. It’s not the plain, business and usual ideas that are going to drive innovation and new ideas. It is the radical notions that take years to catch on. It takes someone like Stephanie, with fiery contagious passion to be a world change-maker in this little corner of Canada.
