Billy Garrison (part 1)
This is the first two part episode for the Go Full Crypto Podcast. We interviewed Billy Garrison (@billy_btc) and had amazing discussions on bitcoin. In the beginning of Go Full Crypto, we covered a lot of material, and referenced bitcoin for just about every example. That is because bitcoin is the base case for understanding the rest of the cryptocurrencies out there. What Billy brings to the table in this interview are the various nuances to the arguments for and against bitcoin. We found talking to Billy quite refreshing. Even though Billy may describe himself as a Bitcoin maximalist of sorts, he understands that there are pros and cons to every story. What makes Billy special, is his ability to break down the arguments for and against Bitcoin, and state his bias while doing so.
The Energy Consumption Argument
One of the topics discussed on this podcast, is the amount of energy that the bitcoin network consumes. The statistic that is often cited is that the Bitcoin network consumes as much electricity as the country of Ireland. What Billy was able to do was put this in perspective for us. What is it that we’re gaining by running the bitcoin network? What sort of electricity is being used to run the network (hydro / solar / coal )? All in all, Billy has a very balanced perspective on the matter. Billy’s background is in environmental science and geology, which makes him uniquely qualified to comment on the matter.
Inflation and Censorship Resistance
For Billy, what cryptocurrencies come down to are two factors, the ability to resist inflation and censorship. This is why Billy is such a proponent of Bitcoin. There is no cryptocurrency that comes close to the level of censorship and inflation resistance achieved by bitcoin. These two points are elaborated upon and discussed at length in the latest episode.
